Anarkali

The famous Indian dress Anarkali has a long story behind it.

The story of a girl named Anarkali is a legend in the Indian history books. A very famous Indian film tells this story enigmatically.

Anarkali played by the scintillating Madhubala

Is a story everyone should know.

As per the movie, Mughal E Azam, after trying for very many years, Mughal emperor Akbar and his Wife Jodhabai are blessed with a son named Saleem.

Born with a golden spoon in his mouth, as Prince Saleem steps into adulthood, his interest in adultery fairly surpasses his interest in politics. As a result Emperor Akbar sends his son away to learn the tricks of war. After many years of training, prince Saleem returns to his home land. He is welcomed with a lot of galore and glamour.

As soon as he returns, Saleem is smitten by the beauty of a slave girl "Anarkali".

Anarkali knows her position as a slave but equally smitten by the Prince, she cannot prevent herself and romance blooms.

Everyone notices the love between the prince and the slave girl but terror strikes when Emperor Akbar learns of this news.

He imprisons Anarkali for this propensity, tortures her and asks her for a promise to never meet the prince again.

Anarkali disobeys but the emperor releases her from prison. Anarkali then overtly displays her affection for Prince Saleem in front of the whole kingdom.

Emperor Akbar is hugely embarrassed but doesn't want to be the bad hit to his son. So he falsely promises to get them married. Secretly the emperor holds Anarkali's mum a prisoner and blackmails Anarkali to leave his son alone.

Marriage happens and the two love birds become one for the night.

Anarkali only asks the emperor one thing in return. That she would like to be the Princess for that one night. Emperor agrees .

Anarkali wears the royal crown for one night. Then she makes Prince Saleem smell a drug that puts him to sleep.

Anarkali is then taken by the guards and it is said that she was buried alive by the emperor. Her only crime was to fall in love with the prince. Sigh!

End of the story. After this movie the dress became famous and you can see the collection of these dresses at
